Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) are gaining a strategic role in this race against time to curb climate change. Because of this, more than 80 SMR projects are under evaluation abroad.
The 2nd Meeting on the Multiple Applications of Nuclear Energy and Radiation has chosen this agenda as a priority in this edition: “The SMR, Applications, Licensing, Financing and Public Acceptance”. The proposal is to continue the debate started at the 1st Workshop held during the XV SIEN, in August 2024, and to advance this discussion towards the consolidation of the project for the first Brazilian SMR.
This technology represents a paradigm shift with a great opportunity to reduce the construction time and initial implementation costs associated with large nuclear power plants. As a result, it will allow for a greater share of nuclear energy in the global energy mix, with positive effects on the current need for carbon emission reduction, energy security through source diversification and guaranteed supply to meet the needs of people and the economy.
